1 Day Mini-Plate Making Course
Demonstration how to create a plate of intense, dense black by indenting a solid field of dots using a mezzotint rocker and work back into the copper plate by burnishing tones that reveal themselves from the dark giving a strong sense of depth, form and chiaroscuro, (light to dark contrasts).
Avery Lau, an experienced mezzotint printmaking artist, will show you the skills of burnishing as well as tricks and tips to make your prints strong and atmospheric. This is a perfect medium for reproducing dramatic light effects and contrasts in your imagery.
On top of the monotone mezzotint, you could try to add another color to the plate and create a brilliant duotone image with viscosity printing technique.
Following a detailed demonstration, you will use your own visual reference which will be developed into suitable imagery to be transferred to a pre-rocked copper plate. Working with a Master Printmaker you will explore using a range of etching tools such as burnishers and scrapers to create rich, velvety blacks, and delicate, soft mid-greys and colors in your final prints.
Students will need to prepare: a 12cm x 7.5 cm image/sketch (hand drawn or digital image printed out) that will be transferred onto their mezzotint plate.

About the Instructor:
Avery Lau (Lau Hong Lam)
Lau Hong Lam studied at the Academia di Belle Arti di Bologna, Italy, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019. Lau’s practice focuses on intaglio and the classical technique of mezzotint in printmaking. He has exhibited internationally, including in South Korea and the United Kingdom. Lau has participated in various exhibitions in Hong Kong, at venues including Ben Brown Fine Arts, Hanart TZ Gallery and Hong Kong Art Centre.
Lau’s works use still life as his genre, mythology as his background; combining with classical intaglio, his works create a harmonious and tranquil atmosphere. He likes to use symbols and puns to express his interpretation and experience to the world and daily life. On his works, the general compositions convey a relax and humorous daily. Under his works, the details and depictions of objects keep the secrets out of the daily. In recent years, he concentrates on mezzotint; and makes a new attempt of combining his illustrations, design and narratives nature into his works.
