Born in 1958, Hong Kong-educated Benny Cheng took a 1978 Higher Diploma in Graphic Communications from Hong Kong Polytechnic and turned it into a serious career-tool with a four-year stint as graphic designer for two of the city-state’s leading design companies.
Moving on and up, 1982 saw Benny add a marketing string to the graphics bow with a move first to worldwide advertising giant O & M Results as Art Director, then on to a twelve-year journey – both career and continental - with Interpublic Group’s Lintas:Hong Kong and Lintas:Hamburg as successively Senior Art Director, Senior International Art Director, Creative Group Head and Creative Director, before shaking free of the corporate body and setting up his own advertising agency, Gallery Ltd., in 1994.
In 1995, he added the role of Associate Editor at Chinese advertising magazine Longyin Review to his agency roles of ECD and CEO at Gallery.
In 2007, Benny became a founding Trustee of The CharCharTrust, a charity dedicated to helping African children find a better future through improved education. His main role is to find creative solutions for the educational aids and publications the Trust produces here in Hong Kong and China.
In 2016 March, solo exhibition on conceptual photography “The Critical Mass” in MPC Studio Hong Kong.
Benny has won numerous local and international awards for graphic design and advertising, including HK4As Awards, HKDA Show, New York Festivals, Creativity Award, Cannes Festival, USA SPD Publication Design Award, China Times Creative Award, LongXi Creative Award, Conqueror Design Competition, MTR Environmental Poster Design Competition.
Benny’s interest in design goes well beyond graphics and includes product and interior design as well as architecture.
